First Man
T
his film will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are moments of tension and moments of excitement, this makes it an excellent watch.
Produced by Universal and directed by Damien Chazzelle, who’s also known for directing ‘La La Land’ and staring Ryan Gosling (Neil Armstrong ) and Claire Foy ( Janet Armstrong ) the film explores the first moon landing and how technical and testing it was for the astronauts and ground crew.
The opening sequence puts you in the cockpit of an X-15. There is no music and all you can hear is the raw sound of the cockpit eg the instruments and Neil’s breathing pattern. This is the scene that stood out the most for me, it makes the audience feel confused and tense, this is what Armstrong was feeling. I enjoyed this film because I like being thrilled.
The story is told through the eyes of Neil and you really become connected to the character so when the tragedies happen in his life, you feel emotional too. I enjoy the scenes in the cockpit as it really puts into perspective how nerve-racking lift off was. It didn’t look like a comfortable environment at all but when the rocket reached the edge of the atmosphere, everything was still and calm and I enjoyed this contrast because of the difference between earth and space and how you can escape from terror to calmness in a matter of seconds.
The music in the film really bought it together as it was magical and almost alien. The music that stood out to me the most was played as the landing craft was approaching the moon and it bought a new horizon as it was a completely new setting, the music was really moving for me. But it stopped when they opened the door of the landing module and there was no sound at all just complete deafening silence. This makes the audience feel in awe and emptiness because of the contrast of volume.
The costumes, props and filming locations where very accurate. For example, the landing module was a cockpit attached to a rig and a crane and the crane swung during filming as the first landing prototype was incredibly unstable. The shots on the moon were filmed in a quarry so you got that dusty effect on the surface and how desolate and like a lunar desert
There were so many incredible shots of the earth from the moon and when they were orbiting the moon they used a giant curved screen and it made it look very realistic for the viewer. They did this to put the operation into scale and see how long it took to get to the moon in real life
I liked this film because of its accuracy, music and the feeling of achievement towards the end of the film and it was a great sight when the astronauts came back alive because I felt a sense of achievement too, and when the new reader read “ the eagle has landed “ I was overwhelmed with emotions from happiness from reaching the moon to sadness because of the tragedies along the way too.
Somehow this film only won a single Oscar which, was for the best visual effects, but it did get 87% rotten tomatoes which I think is around what it deserved.
